Armenian runner Yervand Mkrtchyan has won the gold medal in the men’s 3,000 meters at the Balkan Athletics Championships, setting a new Armenian national record with a time of 7:52.75. The championships were held June 20 to 21 in Volos, Greece.

A second medal for Armenia came in the triple jump, where Razmik Ghazaryan took silver with a result of 16.20 meters.

Armenia was also represented at the championships by Levon Aghasyan in the triple jump, Vahe Arzumanyan in the long jump, Aram Aramyan in the 400 meters hurdles, and Ellada Alaverdyan in the 800 meters.

The gold capped a strong season for Mkrtchyan. Earlier, he won the 1,500 meters at an international tournament in France, clocking 3:38.99. Before that, at the European Challenger Championships in Monaco on May 30, the Armenian runner won two gold medals, taking first in both the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters.
