The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion proclaiming April 2026 as Armenian History Month, marking the 10th straight year of the designation as the Armenian community commemorates the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The proclamation honors the community’s enduring resilience, rich cultural heritage, and lasting contributions to Los Angeles County.

The Board’s proclamation recognizes both the importance of remembrance and the need to uplift the resilience of the Armenian community. The motion was authored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger and Supervisor Janice Hahn.

The proclamation notes that April holds deep historical significance for Armenians. It states that 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915 during the Armenian Genocide and that each year on April 24, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors commemorates the genocide as a solemn reminder of the importance of genocide prevention and the promotion of human rights.

The motion further recognizes that, despite the attempt to eradicate them as a people, Armenians have survived, thrived, and continued to enrich the lives of those around them. It highlights the community’s enduring impact on Los Angeles County and the broader region across medicine, academia, business, the arts, and more, describing that perseverance as a testament to faith, strength, and unity.

“My district is home to the largest Armenian diaspora in the country, and thousands of my constituents are proud members of the Armenian community,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger. “I have seen firsthand how their culture, resilience, and values enrich the diverse fabric of Los Angeles County. Proclaiming April as Armenian History Month is a meaningful way to celebrate their enduring contributions and honor their history.”

“Los Angeles County is the proud home to the largest population of Armenians outside of Armenia,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “It is important that we take this opportunity during Armenian History Month to recognize the Armenian Americans who have made a difference in our communities and celebrate the Armenian culture, while also joining our residents in commemorating and mourning the Armenian Genocide.”

Since first recognizing April as Armenian History Month in 2017, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has continued the designation each year, with 2026 marking the 10th straight year.

Later this month, on April 28, 2026, Supervisor Barger will recognize outstanding members of the Armenian community during the Board of Supervisors Public Hearing meeting.
