Armenia’s first Earth observation satellite, “ArmSat-1,” launched in 2022, has successfully completed its mission after three and a half years in orbit, entering a controlled de-orbit phase, and marking a historic milestone in Armenia’s advancement into the space age and a new era of national scientific and technological progress, according to Mkhitar Hayrapetyan, Minister of High-Tech Industry.
The mission’s completion marks not an end but the beginning of Armenia’s next chapter in space exploration, laying the foundation for future satellite programs and technological growth. Approved by the Government of Armenia, the launch of “ArmSat-1” was a bold and important step that ushered the nation into the modern space era, underscoring the strategic role of space technologies and reaffirming Armenia’s intent to contribute to the global space economy.
Throughout its mission, “ArmSat-1” captured hundreds of images of Armenia and neighboring regions, generating valuable data for scientific research and practical use in agriculture, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. The program also trained Armenian specialists and built a professional team capable of designing, managing, and operating future satellite projects — establishing the human foundation for sustained space development.
The experience and data gained from “ArmSat-1” are already guiding the design of new-generation Earth observation and communication satellites. Technical and technological requirements for “ArmSat-2” have been defined, with active cooperation underway between recognized international organizations and Armenia’s expanding network of government, academic, and private-sector partners. “ArmSat-2” will enhance Armenia’s capabilities in environmental monitoring, agriculture, disaster management, and national security, strengthening the country’s position as a producer of space-based knowledge and innovation.
Building on this success, Armenia remains committed to becoming not only a consumer but also an experienced operator of space technologies, integrating practical, cutting-edge solutions into future missions. The Ministry of High-Tech Industry expressed gratitude to all organizations, specialists, and partners involved, as well as to the Armenian public and media for their ongoing support.
The satellite images reveal Armenia through the “eyes” of “ArmSat-1.”
