Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has arrived in Armenia as part of her ongoing fight against COP29. Thunberg traveled from Tbilisi, Georgia, where she led a protest against the COP29 climate conference, condemning Azerbaijan’s record on climate and human rights.
“Today, with great responsibility and pleasure, I, along with my colleagues, welcomed Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg at the Armenia-Georgia border. She has arrived in Armenia, boycotting COP29 held in Baku. More details on the upcoming processes will be shared soon,” said Oleg Dulgaryan, President of the Centre for Community Mobilization and Support, on his Facebook page.
Prior to her arrival in Armenia, Thunberg organized a protest in Tbilisi, Georgia, against the COP29 climate conference being hosted by Azerbaijan. She strongly criticized Azerbaijan’s climate and human rights record, stating that the country is using COP29 as a façade to escalate control under a false “green” agenda and tighten its grip on power, exacerbating regional tensions.
Thunberg emphasized Azerbaijan’s involvement in ethnic cleansing, humanitarian blockades, and war crimes against ethnic Armenians in Artsakh. In an op-ed published by The Guardian, she highlighted the Aliyev regime’s suppression of its population, crackdowns on civil society, and ties with Israel, which she accused of fueling regional conflicts through oil trade and arms deals.
“The ‘Cop of peace’ theme for this year’s climate conference, proposed by Azerbaijan, is a cruel irony given their human rights violations against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh/Artsakh,” Thunberg stressed. She further warned that Azerbaijan’s efforts to establish a ‘Green Energy Zone’ on ethnically cleansed territories are nothing more than an attempt to greenwash its crimes.
