NewsArmeniaArmenia Unveils New Army Emblem After Ministry Cites Shortcomings in 2001 Design

Armenia’s Ministry of Defense has officially confirmed that the emblem of the Armenian Armed Forces has been changed, describing the move as part of a broader modernization process within the military.

In a video published on the ministry’s website, the previous emblem is described as containing a number of shortcomings.

According to the ministry, the main figure of the previous emblem, the eagle, had significant heraldic and aesthetic flaws. It was depicted with a closed beak, which in heraldry is associated with a calm, non-combat state and is often interpreted as a lifeless figure. The eagle’s main body was not clearly represented, as it was merged into the background surface. Its limbs, claws, and weapons were also absent, creating the image of a weakened and vulnerable creature, which the ministry said is unacceptable for a military symbol.

In addition, the ministry stated that the sword in the previous design was placed behind the shield, which in heraldic terms signifies unpreparedness for defense. The depiction of the national flag in separate ribbon-like elements was also criticized, as it could be interpreted as representing a fragmented or incomplete statehood.

Description and Symbolism of the New Emblem

In the new emblem of the Armed Forces, the central elements have been reinterpreted to emphasize combat readiness and vigilance.

A Complete Eagle: The eagle is now depicted in full form, with a clearly visible head, body, wings, and claws. Its beak is open, which in heraldry symbolizes vitality, readiness, and vigilance, as well as the right to speech and the use of force.

Golden Sun and Shield: Behind the eagle is a golden sun symbolizing light, continuity, and prosperity. On the eagle’s chest is a round golden shield decorated with the Armenian eight-pointed sun cross, with a seed grain at its center symbolizing future soldiers.

Historical Weapons in the Claws: Unlike the previous version, the eagle now holds weapons. In its left claw is a golden sword symbolizing constant readiness, while in its right claw is the Holy Cross of Ashot Yerkat, considered a talisman of Armenian military tradition.

Elements of Statehood: The upper part of the emblem features the Armenian tricolor flag and the map of Armenia, which, according to the ministry, connects the army to the state and emphasizes its role as the main guarantor of national security.

The emblem of the Armenian Armed Forces was approved on January 23, 2001, by then-President and Commander-in-Chief Robert Kocharyan.

Under Armenian law, the Armed Forces emblem is not considered a separate state symbol; therefore, its approval does not require the National Assembly and is instead carried out through subordinate or administrative acts.
