Support Café for Displaced Artsakh Elders Opens in Yerevan & Gyumri, Aiding Emotional Healing & Recovery

NewsArmeniaSupport Café for Displaced Artsakh Elders Opens in Yerevan & Gyumri, Aiding Emotional Healing & Recovery

Alzheimer’s Care Armenia (ACA) has launched the Support Café for Artsakh Elders, a new initiative providing psychosocial support for forcibly displaced older adults from Artsakh. The program aims to create a secure, compassionate environment that supports mental and emotional well-being during this period of transition.

The 12-week pilot program is funded by the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and offers psychosocial interventions rooted in art therapy. Through music, handicrafts, and cognitive-stimulating group activities, the initiative fosters emotional expression, strengthens cognitive abilities, encourages physical activity, and promotes social inclusion.

The program is specifically open to displaced Artsakh seniors aged 60 and over.

“The Artsakh Support Café provides a beacon of hope to our displaced elders by providing much-needed psychological support,” said Dr. Jane Mahakian, Founder of Alzheimer’s Care Armenia.

The cafés are facilitated by a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, social workers, and art therapists. In addition, the professional team participates in weekly trauma-informed care training led by a specialist in trauma therapy.

Currently, Support Cafés are operating in two locations: Yerevan and Gyumri, each accommodating up to 25 participants. Interested individuals can register by calling:

  • 098 444 893 for Gyumri
  • 096 777 908 for Yerevan

Upon the completion of the pilot program, ACA intends to maintain the Support Cafés in Yerevan and Gyumri and expand to other regions with high concentrations of displaced elders, such as Syunik and Vanadzor.
