Yerevan has launched a new effort to reduce the dust and pollution generated by construction across the city. Armenia’s Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body convened Yerevan City Hall officials and the heads of the capital’s administrative districts to discuss measures to protect air quality, cut dust emissions, and strengthen oversight of construction and renovation work in the capital, and the sides agreed to launch joint monitoring activities across all of Yerevan’s administrative districts.
The Inspectorate’s Director, Hovhannes Martirosyan, emphasized the importance of effectively organizing activities carried out within the scope of powers delegated to local self-government bodies, and underlined that environmental norms and requirements must be strictly observed during construction-related activities, including external building cladding, tile grinding, curb installation, the construction of engineering and communication infrastructure, and the renovation of underground pedestrian crossings, according to a statement issued by the agency.
The planned targeted inspections aim to improve compliance with environmental requirements, prevent dust emissions, ensure early detection of violations, and encourage businesses to fully comply with environmental legislation.
The move follows stricter construction regulations adopted by the Yerevan City Council in April 2026, which introduced new dust-control requirements for ongoing construction projects in the capital. Under the regulations, construction sites classified as risk levels 4 and 5 must install irrigation cannons or other irrigation systems for every 500 square meters of underground construction, ensuring a sprinkling range of at least 40 meters during soil works, while the top 1 cm layer of soil must maintain a minimum of 8% relative humidity through irrigation.
The rules also require that sand, cement, gypsum, gravel, and other granular materials be stored in closed containers or packaging, and that such materials be transported using dust-protected, covered, or enclosed vehicles.
