Armenian high school students won 8 gold, 12 silver, and 7 bronze medals at the 6th International Applied Biology Olympiad held June 11 to 14 in Bali, Indonesia, reports Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports.
Twenty-seven students representing seven Armenian educational institutions competed in the final round of the olympiad, which drew 214 students from seven countries: Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Armenia, Russia, and Romania. Students earned their place in the final after passing the previous two rounds online. Organized by the Indonesia Scientific Society, the competition sets itself apart from standard theoretical contests by emphasizing the real-world application of biology through research tasks and problem-solving.
Two of the Armenian competitors, Emmy Nazaryan and Narek Ghazaryan, also took home the Grand Prix Special Award.
The gold medalists were Robert Geghamyan, Samvel Khachatryan, and Sofi Tsulikyan of Quant School; Anzhela Karapetyan, Levon Hovsepyan, Emmy Nazaryan, and Alik Gharagyozyan of Heratsi High School; and Narek Ghazaryan of YSU STEM High School.
Silver medals went to Gevorg Gasparyan, Alexander Grigoryan, and Anna Stepanyan of Quant School; Gor Karapetyan and Edvin Shahinyan of Heratsi High School; Aram Tsaturyan of Heratsi Medical College; Ani Baghdasaryan, Zhanna Hovsepyan, Elina Hakobyan, David Hovhannisyan, and Elen Ghazaryan of YSU STEM High School; and Anahit Hunoyan of Gyumri Foton School.
Bronze medals were awarded to Aram Muradyan and Eva Darbinyan of Quant School; Ani Hambardzumyan and Levon Sargsyan of Heratsi High School; Mari Arakelyan of YSU STEM High School; Adriana Avetisyan of Yerevan High School No. 148; and Milla Hakobyan of Vagharshapat High School No. 2.
The result marks a step up from the 5th IABO, held online, where 21 Armenian students from eight institutions won 5 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze.
