Armenia’s Malkhas Amoyan claimed his fifth European Championship gold medal, defeating Georgia’s Ramaz Zoidze in the 77 kg final at the European Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania.
The bout ended 1:1, with victory awarded to Amoyan for scoring the first point. The Olympic bronze medalist and two-time world champion continued his dominant run after defeating Moldova’s Alexander Gutu 3:1 in the semifinals.
Amoyan has now won five consecutive European Championship titles from 2022 through 2026, further cementing his place among Armenia’s top Greco-Roman wrestlers.
Armenia added another medal in wrestling, with Karen Aslanyan winning bronze in the 63 kg category after defeating Poland’s Mayirbek Salimov by an 11:0 score. Manvel Khachatryan, competing in the 55 kg category, fell 1:3 to Bulgaria’s Stefan Grigorov in the bronze medal match.
Armenia remains in contention for more success in Tirana, with 21-year-old Suren Aghajanyan advancing to the 60 kg final in his senior European Championship debut. The reigning European U23 champion defeated Azerbaijan’s Nihat Mammadli 8:1 in the semifinals to book his place in the final. Gaspar Terteryan also reached the semifinals in the 72 kg category and remains in contention for bronze.
Elsewhere, Armenia also saw success in weightlifting, as Gor Sahakyan won a silver medal at the European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi, Georgia.
Competing in the 71 kg category, the two-time European champion and world bronze medalist lifted 146 kg and 150 kg in the snatch, securing gold in that discipline. In the clean and jerk, Sahakyan lifted 180 kg, finishing third. With a combined total of 330 kg, he was crowned vice-champion of the tournament.
Earlier, Garnik Cholakyan and Alexandra Grigoryan also won silver medals for Armenia at the championship.
