The Paris City Council has unanimously adopted a resolution urging the immediate release of former Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) leaders imprisoned in Azerbaijan. The resolution, passed on Thursday, highlights concerns over their detention conditions and the politically motivated charges against them.
According to the Armenian Embassy in France, Armenian Ambassador Arman Khachatryan attended the session at the invitation of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. The resolution reaffirms Hidalgo’s strong support for Armenia, recalling her visits to the country and her solidarity with the Armenian people.
The council condemned Azerbaijan’s treatment of the former Artsakh officials, labeling their imprisonment as unlawful and their trials as politically driven. It called on international bodies to intervene for their release.
Following Azerbaijan’s military offensive in September 2023, Baku arrested several high-ranking Artsakh officials, including former presidents Arayik Harutyunyan and Bako Sahakyan, as well as other political and military figures.
Their detention has been widely criticized by Armenian and international organizations.
