Amid ongoing uncertainty in Syria, Syrian Armenians seek refuge in Armenia. A group of Armenians arrived in Yerevan on a Beirut-Yerevan flight, sharing their concerns about the situation back home.
Speaking to NEWS.am at Zvartnots International Airport, one of the Syrian-Armenians explained, “We did not feel safe there. Although many people had started to return to their daily work and life, we did not feel safe; there was uncertainty.”
Seta Sefetian, who came from Homs, Syria, expressed similar concerns. “Although the situation was more peaceful in recent days, there are concerns among the local Armenians, and many want to come to Armenia. They promise that everything will be the same, but we are still waiting to see what will happen. It is an uncertain situation,” she said, referring to the opposition forces now in power, including the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militant group.
At the same time, Armenia’s diplomatic mission in Syria is gradually resuming its operations. On December 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Armenian Embassy in Damascus had reopened and returned to normal operations. The consular section is now fully operational, with appointments for Armenian citizens already underway.
The Embassy had been temporarily relocated to Beirut since December 8 due to the uncertain conditions in Syria.
The Ministry also revealed plans to reopen the Consulate General in Aleppo, which was shut down shortly before the city fell to HTS-led forces late last month.
