The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention denounced Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s speech at COP-29 UN climate summit in Baku, describing Azerbaijan’s actions as infringing on “ancient indigenous Armenian territory” and blasting its participants for their silence over the genocide against Artsakh’s (Nagorno-Karabakh) indigenous Armenian population in 2023.
The Institute, known for its advocacy against genocide worldwide, criticized Azerbaijan’s leadership role at the summit and highlighted severe concerns about its treatment of Armenians and the implications of international complicity. In a tweet, the Institute stated that “restoring” Azerbaijani sovereignty over these areas “through genocide is NOT justice under international law” and emphasized that such actions are “not even LEGAL under international law.”

The Lemkin Institute’s remarks underscore mounting concerns about international support and complicity in Azerbaijan’s actions, emphasizing that allowing Azerbaijan to host a global climate summit while being under scrutiny for racial discrimination and alleged genocidal actions is a serious contradiction that must be addressed by the global community.
