Armenian tennis star Elina Avanesyan has achieved her highest-ever position in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, making a significant leap to reach a career-best ranking of No. 50.
The WTA, the global governing body for professional women’s tennis, issued its latest world rankings on Monday, where Avanesyan climbed one spot to make her Top 50 debut. Despite a first-round loss at the US Open to Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 21-year-old became the first Armenian to be ranked inside the Top 50, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Originally competing under the Russian flag, Avanesyan recently changed her citizenship and now represents Armenia on the international stage. This move highlights her Armenian heritage, and she has expressed great pride in playing for the country of her ancestors. Born in Russia to Armenian parents, Elina has deep ties to Armenia and has embraced the opportunity to represent the nation as she continues to make strides in her tennis career.
