SportsBasketballArmenia Defeats Ireland 92-91, Wins Los Angeles International Basketball Cup Title

In a dramatic conclusion to the Los Angeles International Basketball Cup, Armenia triumphed over Ireland with a heart-stopping 92-91 victory, reports Zartonk Media.

Armenia encountered difficulty early on, falling behind 18-32 just minutes into the second half. However, a spirited 7-0 run, highlighted by a breakaway layup from Andre Mkrtchyan-Spight, reignited their hopes. This momentum carried Armenia through a 25-10 extended run, allowing them to edge ahead with a 43-42 lead at halftime.

The battle intensified in the third quarter, ending with both teams deadlocked at 66-66. The final quarter was a thriller, with Armenia trailing by 6 before clawing back to within one point with under two and a half minutes remaining. In the decisive moments, Connor Essegian’s pivotal and-one layup, coupled with two clutch free throws, sealed the win for Armenia.

Andre Mkrtchyan-Spight was instrumental, delivering a stellar performance with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Anto Balian contributed significantly with 13 points and 3 rebounds, while Connor Essegian added 20 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals, playing a crucial role in Armenia’s victory.

The tournament started on a high note for Armenia with a dominant 89-57 win against Guatemala on Friday, June 21.

Currently ranked 84th in FIBA standings, Armenia’s impressive display this weekend sets a strong foundation as they prepare for their final FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 pre-qualifiers against Austria on November 24, 2024, and Albania on February 20, 2025.
