A German citizen faces up to two years in prison for “insulting Turkish identity.” According to Sözcü, 63-year-old German dentist Christian B. was arrested after arguing with a Turk for violating Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, reports News.am.

“This is how you Turks are. This can in no way be considered a democracy,” the dentist told a Turkish citizen during an argument near the Antalya airport.

The latter filed a complaint with the Turkish police, presenting the video of the quarrel to the officials. Christian B. was released immediately after his arrest, but his passport and other documents were confiscated before the trial.

Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code prohibits “insulting Turkey, the Turkish nation, Turkish state institutions or Turkish national heroes.”

The crime is punishable by up to two years in prison.
