U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to arrive in Armenia on Tuesday, May 26, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry (MFA) confirmed on Monday, in an announcement made less than a day before the visit itself.
According to the MFA, Rubio will hold a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, after which the two will deliver joint statements to the press. The signing of bilateral documents is planned during the visit, and Mirzoyan is expected to hold a separate press conference with reporters afterward.
The trip marks the first visit to Armenia by a sitting U.S. Secretary of State since Hillary Clinton traveled to Yerevan in 2010 and returned again in 2012.
Notably, the visit lands less than two weeks before Armenia’s June 7 parliamentary elections.
