The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has expressed gratitude to international partners, including Armenia, for statements of support, letters and phone calls following Iranian drone strikes on the territory of Nakhichevan. In a post accompanying the statement on X, an image included the flag of Armenia among those countries acknowledged.
“We express our sincere gratitude for the statements of support, letters, and phone calls received from our international partners following the Iranian drone strikes against the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
We highly value the solidarity shown with Azerbaijan and the clear reaffirmation of support for our country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of its borders. We thank all countries and international organisations who stood with Azerbaijan during this time and appreciate their continued support and engagement,” the statement said.
On March 5, Azerbaijani MFA reported that drone attacks were carried out against the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of the Republic of Azerbaijan from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to the statement, one drone struck the terminal building of the airport in the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, while another drone fell near a school building in the village of Shakarabad.
Both the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides later shared press releases about a phone call held on March 5 between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.
According to the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s statement, during the conversation the ministers exchanged views on recent developments in the region. The sides expressed concern and noted the importance of refraining from actions that could further escalate tensions, emphasizing the need to ensure stability and security. The ministers also noted the importance of ensuring lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
However, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry published a more detailed account of the conversation, stating that during the phone call Bayramov informed Mirzoyan about the drone attacks carried out against the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan on March 5, which it said resulted in damage to civilian infrastructure and injuries to civilians.
Armenia’s statement did not mention the alleged drone attack on Nakhichevan Airport, nor did it publicly condemn the incident or identify who carried it out.
According to Armenia’s Foreign Ministry, on March 6 Mirzoyan also held a phone conversation with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The interlocutors discussed ongoing developments in the Middle East and expressed concern over the continued escalation of the situation, emphasizing the importance of ensuring stability and security in the region.
