U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday, June 10, on what he called a “decisive victory” in Armenia’s parliamentary elections, stating that he was “very proud to have Endorsed him for Re-Election” on May 27, eleven days before the vote, becoming the first sitting American president to endorse a candidate in an Armenian election, reports Zartonk Media.
“Congratulations to Nikol Pashinyan for his decisive victory in Armenia’s National Elections. I was very proud to have Endorsed him for Re-Election, and have no doubt that, with him as the Leader of the beautiful Country of Armenia, it will attain levels of Greatness and Success beyond everyone’s wildest expectations! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
On May 27, Trump gave Pashinyan his “complete and total endorsement” on Truth Social, tying it to the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, the transit corridor through Armenia’s southern Syunik province that would link mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhichevan exclave. That post came less than 48 hours after Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a strategic partnership agreement in Yerevan, alongside framework deals on critical minerals and the corridor, and followed Vice President JD Vance’s visit in February.
Trump’s congratulations arrive as Russian President Vladimir Putin withholds his own. The Kremlin says Putin will decide whether to congratulate Pashinyan only after final results are published on June 14, citing “numerous irregularities,” while Moscow presses Yerevan to choose between the European Union and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union and weighs penalties against Armenia in the CSTO.
Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission is set to publish final results on June 14, with recounts underway in multiple polling stations, including nearly all of Yerevan at the request of opposition-aligned candidates. Preliminary results show Civil Contract at 49.825 percent, Strong Armenia at 23.281 percent, and the Armenia Alliance at 9.934 percent, while Prosperous Armenia remains just below the threshold at 3.996 percent.
