NewsDiasporaThree Armenians Vana Nazarian, Seta Topouzian and Chahi Tarakjian Win in Canada’s Montreal and Laval Municipal Elections

Three Armenian candidates achieved victory in Quebec’s 2025 municipal elections, marking a proud moment for the Armenian community in Canada. The elections, held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, saw Armenians win key borough leadership positions in both Montreal and Laval — a testament to their growing civic influence and engagement in Quebec’s political landscape, reports Horizon Weekly.

Armenian Victories in Montreal and Laval

In Montreal, Vana Nazarian was re-elected for a second term under the Ensemble Montréal party, representing the Côte-de-Liesse district in the Saint-Laurent borough.

Also re-elected under the same party was Chahi (“Sharkie”) Tarakjian, who will serve another term representing the Cap-Saint-Jacques district in the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough.

In Laval, Seta Topouzian was re-elected for a second term from the Mouvement Lavallois – Équipe Stéphane Boyer party as borough mayor of the Renaud-Coursol district (District 7).

Close Contests

Meanwhile, Mary Deros, who ran under Ensemble Montréal for the Parc-Extension district in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough, narrowly lost her race. Deros has filed an appeal, and the results remain under review.

Broader Election Context

In Montreal, Soraya Martinez Ferrada was elected as the city’s new mayor — becoming the second woman to hold the position and the first who is not native-born, having immigrated to Canada from Chile.

In Laval, Stéphane Boyer, leader of Mouvement Lavallois, secured re-election for a second term as mayor.
