Armenian athletes continue to participate in the World University Summer Games currently underway in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany, with the support of Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport.

In swimming, 22-year-old Varsenik Manucharyan set a new Armenian national record in the women’s 100-meter freestyle with a time of 58.19 seconds. She also competed in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing in 1:01.35 and placing 20th out of 43 participants. Fellow swimmer Ashot Chakhoyan completed the 100-meter freestyle in 54.66 seconds.

In rhythmic gymnastics, Julieta Avetisyan and Silva Sargsyan concluded their competitions with scores of 78.350 and 83.700 points, respectively.

In fencing, Daria Malysheva advanced from the group stage after winning four matches. She went on to defeat a Polish fencer 15:12 in the round of 32, but was later eliminated after a 15:4 loss to an Italian opponent, just short of the quarterfinals.

Taekwondo athletes Meliné Hovhannisyan (57 kg) and Davit Torosyan (68 kg) have also concluded their events.

The Armenian delegation at the Universiade consists of 18 athletes competing in seven sports. The delegation is led by Hovhannes Gabrielyan, President of the Armenian Student Sports Federation. Sergey Abrahamyan, Head of the Program Implementation Department in the Sports Policy Directorate at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, serves as the delegation’s secretary.

On July 21, three Armenian athletes are scheduled to compete: taekwondo athlete Armen Danielyan (74 kg), long jumper Yana Sargsyan, and swimmer Ashot Chakhoyan in the 50-meter breaststroke.
