Charles Aznavour Statue Unveiled in Yerevan, Armenia

NewsArmeniaCharles Aznavour Statue Unveiled in Yerevan, Armenia

A statue honoring legendary French-Armenian singer and National Hero of Armenia Charles Aznavour was officially unveiled in Yerevan on July 18, 2025—marking 101 years since his birth.

The monument was installed in Charles Aznavour Square, located in front of Moscow Cinema in the heart of the Armenian capital. The ceremony was attended by Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies, as well as Aznavour’s family, friends, and local officials.

The sculpture was created by artist Davit Minasyan, who won an international design competition launched earlier this year by the Yerevan Municipality in collaboration with the Aznavour Foundation. The contest attracted over 60 applicants and more than 100 miniature models from artists worldwide. Minasyan’s winning design was cast in Gyumri and installed on July 16, two days ahead of the unveiling.

The monument pays tribute to Aznavour’s profound legacy as a singer, songwriter, actor, and humanitarian, whose decades-long career left a lasting imprint on both Armenian and French culture. Widely regarded as one of France’s greatest musical icons, Aznavour was also named a National Hero of Armenia in 2004 for his advocacy during and after the 1988 Spitak earthquake and for his lifelong connection to the Armenian people.

The presence of French officials at the ceremony underscored the enduring ties between France and Armenia, a relationship Aznavour himself embodied as a cultural bridge between the two nations.
