A €14.8 million solid waste management program, co-financed by the Armenian government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), has officially launched in the Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions of Armenia.
The initiative was unveiled in Hrazdan, the administrative center of Kotayk, marking a major step toward modernizing Armenia’s waste infrastructure in line with European Union standards.
On July 8, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited the Hrazdan community of the Kotayk region, where he gave the official start to the Solid Household Waste Management Program for the Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions.
As part of the project, a new sanitary landfill was constructed in Hrazdan, alongside the establishment of waste transfer stations in the towns of Martuni and Akunk. Comprehensive waste collection schemes have also been developed for all settlements in both regions, with optimized collection routes mapped out to ensure efficiency. Modern equipment and vehicles were procured to support the upgraded system.
To oversee operations, the communities of Kotayk and Gegharkunik have jointly established and registered a dedicated company—Solid Waste Management of Kotayk and Gegharkunik Regions LLC—tasked with providing waste collection services and managing the landfills and transfer facilities.
The project aims to improve environmental sustainability, public health, and the overall quality of life for residents of the two regions.
The EBRD is one of Armenia’s largest institutional investors, with a strong focus on enhancing competitiveness and strengthening the country’s financial sector through risk-sharing and targeted investment. Since beginning operations in Armenia, the bank has invested over €2.4 billion across 220 projects spanning energy, infrastructure, telecommunications, and finance.
