NewsArmeniaArmenia’s May 2025 Tourist Numbers Rise 8.63%, First Monthly Growth Since January 2024 as January–May Total Falls 9.61% Year Over Year

A total of 181,436 tourists visited Armenia in May 2025, marking an 8.63% increase—or 14,387 more visitors— compared to 167,049 in May 2024, according to the Tourism Committee.

May 2025 was the first monthly increase in tourist numbers since January 2024.

From January to May 2025, 691,882 tourists visited Armenia, marking a 9.61% decrease—or 73,562 fewer visitors— compared to 765,444 during the same period in 2024.

Top Tourist Source Countries (January–May 2025):

  • Russia: 256,367 visitors (37%)
  • Georgia: 100,645 visitors (15%)
  • Iran: 55,580 visitors (8%)
  • India: 10,159 visitors (1.46%)
  • China: 9,508 visitors (1.37%)

Following closely behind were:

  • United States: 9,488 visitors (1.37%)
  • France: 9,068 visitors (1.31%)
  • Ukraine: 9,028 visitors (1.30%)
  • Philippines: 8,780 visitors (1.27%)
  • Germany: 7,865 visitors (1.14%)
  • Other countries: 38.9% of total.

Roughly 60% of all visitors arrived by air. In terms of gender distribution, around 60% of tourists were men and 40% women.

The most active age group among visitors was 35–44 years old, accounting for 26% of arrivals. This was followed by tourists aged 25–34 (24%), 45–54 (14%), 55–64 (13%), 18–24 (9%), 65 and older (7%), under 12 (4%), and 13–17 (3%).

Tourist arrivals in 2025 by month show a consistent year-over-year decline until May. In January, there were 139,482 visitors compared to 153,319 in January 2024, a decrease of 9.0%. February saw 117,372 arrivals, down from 127,241, a drop of 7.75%. March recorded 129,887 tourists versus 152,865 the year before, a 15.0% decline. In April, arrivals totaled 123,705, compared to 163,970 in April 2024, a decrease of 24.6%. May, however, reversed the trend, with 181,436 visitors—an 8.63% increase from 167,049 in May 2024.

Although May 2025 showed a rebound, the overall number of foreign tourists in 2024 had dropped by 4.7% to 2,208,000, largely due to a decline in visitors from Russia—Armenia’s largest tourism source—whose share fell from 49.1% in 2023 to 42.5% in 2024.

For further context, tourist arrivals in Armenia for the January–May period in prior years were: 806,000 in 2023, 464,200 in 2022, 181,900 in 2021, 307,000 in 2020, and 617,500 in 2019.

Looking at full-year figures, Armenia recorded 1.89 million tourists in 2019, followed by a sharp drop to 375,000 in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, numbers rose to 870,000, then more than doubled to 1.67 million in 2022, before peaking at 2.33 million in 2023. In 2024, annual tourist arrivals slightly declined to 2.2 million.

Despite the year-to-date decline in 2025, May’s growth may indicate early signs of recovery for Armenia’s tourism sector after a period of regional instability and shifting travel trends.
