Former Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan Re-Elected as Gyumri Mayor by Opposition After Over a Decade

NewsArmeniaFormer Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan Re-Elected as Gyumri Mayor by Opposition After Over a Decade

Vardan Ghukasyan, the former mayor of Gyumri and a candidate representing the Armenian Communist Party, has been elected as the new head of the Gyumri. The decision was made during the first session of the newly elected Gyumri Community Council on April 16, with 18 votes in favor and none against.

The ruling Civil Contract party did not participate in the Council’s elections, choosing to boycott the vote and demand out-of-turn elections.

Ghukasyan, who previously served as mayor of Armenia’s second-largest city from 1999 to 2012, returns to leadership after more than a decade.

The vote follows the Gyumri local elections, held on March 30, where multiple parties and political alliances competed for seats on the Community Council.
