Today, on February 7, 2025, the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Montebello, California, was officially designated as a California State Historical Landmark. This landmark event marks a historic moment for the Armenian-American community and represents a significant achievement in recognizing the struggles and enduring spirit of Armenians.
The designation was made possible through the steadfast support of the City of Montebello, Senator Bob Archuleta and his office, along with the State Historical Resources Commission of California (SHRC). The concerted effort by these entities underscores a broader commitment to acknowledging the historical atrocities faced by Armenians and ensuring that such histories are remembered and learned from.
Established in 1968, the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument honors the memory of the one and a half million victims of the Armenian Genocide and their descendants. Today, it stands not only as a symbol of the tragedies that befell the Armenian people but also as a beacon of resilience for over half a million Armenian-Americans residing in California, which is home to the largest Armenian diaspora in the Western Hemisphere.
The monument’s designation as a State Historical Landmark is particularly notable as it is the first Armenian Genocide memorial built on public land in the United States. This recognition is a day of celebration for the Armenian-American community and all who advocate for justice and human rights. It is a reminder of the importance of recognizing historical atrocities to guide us toward a more just and informed future.
