The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced an increase of $130 million in financial assistance to Armenia, bringing the total support to $250 million. This new funding aims to strengthen democratic institutions and values, improve public governance, and boost economic development in key sectors.
The Armenian government approved the amendment to the grant agreement on September 5 during a Cabinet meeting. The original five-year agreement, signed in 2022 between Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan and USAID Armenia Mission Director John Allelo, initially allocated $120 million to Armenia. The additional funds will be used to support a wide range of initiatives aimed at promoting democracy, economic growth, and efficient governance.
The $130 million will be directed towards:
- Institutionalizing effective and accountable governance
- Strengthening democratic institutions and values
- Increasing civic engagement in democratic processes
- Improving the transparency and effectiveness of public administration
- Enhancing economic management and stability
- Boosting the competitiveness of targeted industries
- Improving sustainable management of natural resources
- Safeguarding democratic achievements
- Addressing economic challenges
Additionally, in July, USAID announced a $5 million investment to support a collaboration between the Armenian government and Amazon Web Services for the development of cloud infrastructure in Armenia. USAID Administrator Samantha Power also pledged continued support to help Armenia achieve energy security and independence.
This significant increase in funding reflects the U.S. commitment to supporting Armenia’s ongoing democratic and economic reforms, while ensuring the country’s resilience in the face of current and future challenges.
