DiasporaEvidence Emerges Of Early Armenians In Jerusalem After A Khachkar Dating Back To 12th Century Was Discovered.

Large cross-stone (Khachkar) discovered dating back to the 12th century or earlier among other archeological materials during the renovation of the Armenian kindergarten in Jerusalem, informs Father Baret Yeretsian, head of the real estate office of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, reports Armenpress.

The inscription on the Khachkar reads “Lord Jesus, remember” with an Armenian flowered cross, as well as grape motifs, a more detailed examination is set to take place.

A mosaic was also discovered, judging by the style, probably from the Byzantine period. Copper coins from the Byzantine and (or) Mamluk period have also been found.

Theses findings show the early Armenian presence and pilgrimage in Jerusalem.
