Yerevan’s singing fountains on Republic Square will have their technical systems fully modernized, nearly 20 years after their last overhaul, Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced on October 5.
The city will carry out the work with Aquatique Show International, the French company that specializes in water shows and fountain systems. The same firm rebuilt these fountains in 2007, at a cost of around 1.4 million euros.
Avinyan said the systems have significantly worn out over roughly 2 decades and their capabilities have narrowed. The current setup cannot deliver modern water, light and sound effects.
The project will create new water, light and sound capabilities, and the fountain program will be possible to refresh periodically with new shows and content.
“At the end of the works we will have fountains in harmony with the beauty of Republic Square and worthy of the city’s main square,” Avinyan wrote.
Avinyan tied the project to the anniversary. 2026 marks 100 years since construction began on Republic Square. No cost, timeline or start date has been announced.
The singing fountains were shut for a full year during the 2007 rebuild and reopened that September. They run from late March into November and are operated by the municipality’s Water Structures company.
Republic Square was designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan between 1924 and 1936. Construction began in 1926 and finished in 1977. The square was last reconstructed and landscaped in 2003 and 2004. It covers 3 hectares, with the fountains and pool occupying the trapezoidal section in front of the History Museum and National Gallery.
