Armenian university students won four medals, one gold, two silver, and one bronze, at the 33rd International Mathematics Competition for University Students in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, held July 27 to August 3, reports Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports.
Vahan Baghdasaryan won gold. Ruben Hambardzumyan and Tsovak Yegoryan won silver, and Stepan Gevorgyan won bronze. Edgar Hoghmrtsyan received a certificate of commendation. The competition brought together 447 students from 135 universities around the world.
The Armenian team was led by Karen Keryan and coached by Albert Gevorgyan, Vazgen Mikaelyan, and Karen Keryan.
First held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in 1994 and jointly organized by University College London and the American University in Bulgaria, the IMC is one of the world’s leading university-level mathematics competitions. Two of its former competitors, Caucher Birkar and Maryna Viazovska, went on to win the Fields Medal, one of the highest honors in mathematics.
