Armenia’s birth rate decreased by 6.3% from January to August 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, while the death rate rose by 0.8%, according to data released by the National Statistical Committee of Armenia.
Population and Demographics
The decline in birth rates that began in early 2024 has persisted into 2025, with 20,437 babies born from January to August—down from 21,821 during the same period last year. The number of stillbirths also fell by 17.2%, totaling 256 cases. Despite this decline, Armenia’s vitality index—the ratio of births to deaths—remained positive at 118.8%, though lower than 127.8% recorded during the corresponding months of 2024.
During this period, natural population growth stood at 3,227 people, down from 4,749 in the same months of 2024.
Birth Trends
Armenia’s birth rate has been in steady decline since January 2024.

- Child mortality (ages 0–4): 181 deaths (+9.7% vs. 2024)

Child mortality has risen notably this year. Between January and August 2025, 181 children aged 0–4 died, including 147 infants under one, compared to 165 total child deaths (including 137 infants) during the same period in 2024.
The data reflects a persistent demographic challenge, as fewer births and higher infant mortality continue to offset modest population growth.
Mortality and Causes of Death
A total of 17,210 deaths were registered in Armenia between January and August 2025, marking a 0.8% increase compared to 17,072 deaths during the same period in 2024. Diseases of the circulatory system remained the leading cause of death, followed by cancers, respiratory diseases, and digestive disorders.
Leading causes of death:
- Circulatory system diseases: 51.8% (8,908 cases, ?2.3%)
- Neoplasms: 19.5% (3,360 cases, ?2.7%)
- Respiratory diseases: 10.5% (1,802 cases, +12.4%)
- Digestive system diseases: 4.7% (804 cases, ?10.3%)
- External causes/injuries: 3.6% (620 cases, ?10.3%)
- Endocrine system diseases: 2.1% (364 cases, +16.3%)
- Infectious diseases: 1.3% (233 cases, +46.5%)
The data shows a continued dominance of circulatory and oncological diseases as the leading causes of death, though infectious and endocrine diseases have shown sharp year-over-year increases.
Marriage and Divorce Trends
In parallel with the decline in births, Armenia is also seeing fewer marriages and more divorces.
From January to August 2025, 8,985 marriages were registered—a 13.6% decrease compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, the number of divorces increased to 3,179, reflecting a 4.5% year-on-year rise.
