Azerbaijani Police Demand $130 In Taxes From Iranian Truck Drivers Transporting Goods Along Armenia’s Goris-Kapan Road.

HomelandAzerbaijani Police Demand $130 In Taxes From Iranian Truck Drivers Transporting Goods Along Armenia's Goris-Kapan Road.

On September 12, Azerbaijani police officers illegally deployed along the Goris-Kapan road in the Syunik Province began inspecting trucks with Iranian license plates, headed to Armenia.

The Azerbaijani police are informing the Iranian truck drivers that they are now in Azerbaijani territory, demanding $130 in cash from the drivers transporting goods and products to Armenia by checking travel documents and license plates.

Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee confirmed that it is collecting money from Iranian truck drivers on the Goris-Kapan interstate road in Armenia’s Syunik province under the guise of “levying road tax and other customs payments from vehicles passing through the territory of Azerbaijan,” reports Haqqin.az.

“After the drivers said they had no money, the Azerbaijani police registered the drivers’ passport and details and said that they should pay the money before the return trip,” reports Gevorg Tosunyan of CivilNet.

Azerbaijani troops have reportedly erected banners on both sides of the Goris-Kapan road that read: “You are entering the territory of Azerbaijan.”

The border guards of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia and the guards of the border service of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation are working together to resolve the situation.

The NSS referred to the area near the Vorotan settlement on Goris-Kapan road as “in the area of Eyvazli settlement under Azerbaijani control” in their official statement.
