85-Year-Old Chris Baghsarian Abducted From Sydney Home, Found Dead; Two Men Charged With Murder

85-year-old Chris Baghsarian was abducted from his North Ryde home in Sydney in the early hours of February 13 and later found dead, with police charging two men with murder in what investigators believe may have been a mistaken identity kidnapping.

CCTV footage from a nearby home shows three men forcing Mr. Baghsarian into an SUV at around 5 a.m. on February 13.

On the 11th day of the search operation, police discovered Baghsarian’s remains near Pitt Town Golf Club in Sydney’s northwest. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

A video released by the kidnappers has circulated, showing Baghsarian face covered and his hands bound with duct tape.

On February 25, police arrested 29-year-old Gerard Anthony Andrews in Kenthurst and 24-year-old Daniel Stevens in Castle Hill. Both were taken to Riverstone Police Station, where they were charged with murder and with kidnapping or detaining in company for ransom resulting in death.

Investigators believe Mr. Baghsarian may have been kidnapped by mistake. ABC has learned that police suspect the abductors may have intended to target a relative of Sydney businessman Dimitri Stepanyan, who lives in North Ryde.

Andrews appeared in court, where his lawyer, McGirr, said the investigation is ongoing and that he is awaiting the brief of evidence, which is expected to be presented in April.

“Of course, it is obvious to me the particularly sensitive nature of this case for the victim’s family,” he said.

Stevens also appeared in court for the first time. His lawyer, Javid Faiz, did not apply for bail but informed the magistrate that his client requires medication for shingles.

Stevens’ case was adjourned until April 17.

Outside the court, Faiz told reporters that his client understands the court process will take time.

“It is a tragic incident. He understands the nature and seriousness of the charges and is taking the matter seriously,” he said.

Police continue their investigation.
