The Geghard Foundation has documented ongoing attacks on Armenian cultural heritage in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), highlighting a pattern of systematic destruction. According to the foundation’s findings, the Holy Mother of God Church in the village of Vaghuhas, Martakert region, has been targeted by Azerbaijani vandals. At least one khachkar (Armenian cross-stone) in the churchyard was broken, and sacred icons inside the church were reportedly removed.
The foundation notes that such acts are part of a broader policy aimed at erasing Armenian presence and identity in the region. Despite Azerbaijan’s repeated claims on international platforms to be a “multicultural” and “tolerant” state, the destruction of Armenian monuments exposes the country’s ongoing anti-Armenian policies.
The Geghard Foundation emphasizes the importance of preserving Armenian Christian heritage, which constitutes a significant part of the global Christian legacy. The foundation calls on international organizations and stakeholders concerned with cultural preservation to pay attention to these violations and take measures to prevent further destruction.
The Geghard Foundation is a scientific and analytical institution engaged in the study of historical, political, economic, demographic, and cultural issues in Armenia and the surrounding region, with a mission to bring together experts in Armenian studies and social sciences.
