The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced that the road leading to the Armenian Monastery of St. George in Ramla has officially been named “Armenian Church,” and expressed gratitude to Ramla Mayor Michael Vidal and City Council Member Mousa Saba for supporting the decision.
Located in the historic old city of Ramla in central Israel, the Armenian Monastery of St. George was founded in the 14th century by Armenian monks and is dedicated to St. George, one of the most revered saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
For centuries, the monastery has served as a central institution for the Armenian community in Israel, functioning as a place of worship and a center of education and cultural life. Today, it remains an active religious site and welcomes visitors interested in its history and enduring role in Armenian Christian heritage.
The monastery is noted for its distinctive architectural character, reflecting a blend of Armenian and Byzantine influences. The complex includes a central courtyard, a bell tower, and a series of chapels and prayer halls.
It also houses a significant collection of religious artifacts, including ancient manuscripts, icons, and intricately crafted crosses.
