21-year-old Armenian chess prodigy Mariam Mkrtchyan has been awarded the title of Woman Grandmaster by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), reports the Armenian Chess Federation which congratulated her and wished her many more achievements. She received the Woman Grandmaster title at the 4th FIDE Council in 2025.

Earlier this month, Mkrtchyan won the Women’s section of the Kazakhstan Chess Cup 2025 with 7.5 points. She is a member of Armenia’s women’s national chess team.

Mkrtchyan is the champion of the 77th Armenian Women’s Chess Championship and the 2022 Armenian women’s chess champion. She won the U18 World Championship title later that same year and subsequently claimed the U18 European Championship title.

Mkrtchyan was awarded the FIDE Woman International Master title in 2021.
