Sunday, December 21, marked the official reopening of the Saint Gregory Armenian Orthodox Church in central Baghdad, inaugurated by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani, following the completion of its first and most extensive restoration since its establishment in 1957. Held ahead of the upcoming Christmas celebrations, the reopening underscored the church’s historical, religious, and cultural significance for Iraq’s Armenian community and the capital’s architectural heritage.

During his visit, Prime Minister Al-Sudani toured the church’s halls and corridors to review the comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation works carried out at the historic and sacred religious landmark. He expressed appreciation for being present at the site and announced the church’s reopening after the completion of the works. He highlighted the church’s significance as a symbol honoring the innocent civilians targeted by terrorism in Al-Tayaran Square, all of whom were peaceful Iraqi civilians.

“The reconstruction of the church reflects the spirit of diversity and coexistence that defines the new Iraq,” said Al-Sudani, adding, “It represents an important step toward restoring Baghdad’s historic brilliance and preserving its cultural, civilizational, and architectural heritage.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the church constitute a national responsibility and a commitment to the Armenian community as a valued component of Iraqi society. He thanked all those who contributed to the rehabilitation efforts and reaffirmed the government’s continued dedication to protecting heritage and preserving Baghdad’s historical identity through the revival of its architectural landmarks.

Al-Sudani further noted that rehabilitation works in Baghdad’s old districts and historic landmarks will continue, underscoring that the city’s churches, mosques, and heritage buildings are central to preserving the capital’s architectural legacy. He acknowledged the sacrifices of martyrs from all components of the Iraqi people who fought terrorism and stated that Iraq emerged united and victorious from its confrontation with terrorism, moving forward on a path of reconstruction and comprehensive economic, urban, and developmental progress.

Established in 1957, the Saint Gregory Armenian Orthodox Church has undergone its first and most extensive restoration since its founding. The works included maintenance, structural rehabilitation, and aesthetic renovations, aimed at reviving its role as both a religious and cultural landmark in Baghdad. The church also hosts the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Iraq, led by His Grace Bishop Oshakan Gyulgyulyan, Primate of the Diocese, making it the central hub of the Armenian Church in the country.
