Armenian weightlifters Emma Poghosyan and Liana Gyurjyan secured Armenia’s fourth and fifth gold medals at the EWF 2025 European Junior & Under-23 Weightlifting Championships in Durrës, Albania, after outstanding performances in their respective categories, bringing the national team’s total to five gold medals at the tournament, according to the Weightlifting Federation of Armenia.

Emma Poghosyan – European Under-20 Champion, New European Record

Armenia’s Emma Poghosyan captured the European Under-20 title, setting a new European record and securing Armenia’s fourth gold medal at the championships.

Competing in the women’s 86 kg U20 category, Poghosyan delivered an exceptional performance in both disciplines. In the snatch, she successfully lifted 100 kg, 103 kg, and 105 kg, finishing third in that event. In the clean and jerk, she lifted 131 kg and 136 kg, setting a new European record and taking first place.

With a combined total of 241 kg, Poghosyan secured the European champion title, narrowly surpassing Turkey’s Can Bursa, who lifted 239 kg (107 + 132), while Russia’s Maria Gruzdova finished third with 235 kg (105 + 130).

Poghosyan’s success comes under the guidance of head coach Artashes Nersisyan, assistant coach Taron Tovmasyan, and personal coach Kristine Petrosyan.

Liana Gyurjyan – European Under-23 Champion, Armenia’s Fifth Gold

Armenia’s Liana Gyurjyan claimed gold in the 86 kg women’s Under-23 category, earning Armenia’s fifth gold medal at the championships.

Gyurjyan had three successful attempts in the snatch, lifting 95 kg, 100 kg, and 102 kg, earning her first place in that event. In the clean and jerk, she lifted 125 kg and 130 kg, also taking first place.

With a combined total of 232 kg, Gyurjyan was crowned European Under-23 Champion.

Her achievement comes under the guidance of head coach Artashes Nersisyan, assistant coach Taron Tovmasyan, and personal coach Ashot Danielyan.

Armenia’s Continued Success

Following these victories by Poghosyan and Gyurjyan, Armenia now holds five gold medals at the EWF 2025 European Junior & Under-23 Weightlifting Championships — a remarkable performance that underscores the strength and depth of the Armenian national team on the international stage.

The tournament continues with more Armenian athletes in action: Alina Sukiasyan (+86 kg, U20), Misha Melkonyan (110 kg, U20), and Vardges Margaryan (+110 kg, U20) — all aiming to further add to Armenia’s growing medal count.
