The Armenian government has allocated about 800 million drams ($2 million) for large-scale renovation works at the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum, Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan announced on Wednesday.
“These funds are substantial for establishing the necessary conditions. We must ensure that these issues are addressed for the next decade,” Andreasyan said at a press conference.
Reports circulated earlier on Telegram suggested that ongoing repairs had restricted access to the memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. However, the Museum clarified that scheduled renovation works have been underway for the past two months and that public access to the memorial has not been interrupted.
According to Andreasyan, both the museum and the memorial complex had reached a critical state. “The entire waterproofing system was inadequately designed. Serious issues emerged during rainfall, threatening the preservation of exhibits, archives, and even the structural stability of the memorial,” she explained.
The renovation is being carried out in phases under a state contract. The minister expressed confidence that the project will be completed by the end of 2026.
