NewsArmeniaVazgen Sargsyan Would Have Turned 66 Today

Today marks the 66th birthday of Vazgen Sargsyan, Armenia’s National Hero, former Prime Minister, and the country’s first Minister of Defense.

Sargsyan, known as “Sparapet,” which means Commander, was a key figure in the formation of Armenia’s national army and played a crucial role in the country’s defense and state-building efforts. He believed that no economic program or government initiative could succeed without a deep sense of national responsibility among the people.

“We need a revolution in our souls, in our ideas, otherwise, the programs and governments will follow one another, and the cart will not move,” Sargsyan once said, emphasizing the need for personal dedication to national progress.

Born on March 5, 1959, in the village of Ararat, Sargsyan pursued higher education at the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture. He initially worked as a teacher before becoming actively involved in public life as a writer and journalist. His literary contributions earned him membership in the Writers’ Union of Armenia in 1985.

His political and military career took shape during the Artsakh liberation war. From the early days of the movement, he was among the first organizers of the struggle, leading the Yerkrapah Volunteer Detachments and serving in Armenia’s Supreme Council. His dedication to Armenia’s defense led to his appointment as Minister of Defense in 1991, a role he held multiple times until 1999.

Sargsyan was instrumental in shaping Armenia’s armed forces, fostering unity between professional officers and volunteer fighters. His leadership was marked by his straightforwardness and commitment to national security.

In 1999, Sargsyan entered politics as the leader of the Republican Party and co-chair of the “Unity” Alliance. Following a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections, he was appointed Prime Minister in June of that year. Despite his brief tenure, he demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities.

Tragically, on October 27, 1999, Vazgen Sargsyan was assassinated in the Armenian National Assembly during a terrorist attack that also claimed the lives of other key government officials.

Posthumously honored in December 1999, Sargsyan’s contributions to Armenia’s independence, security, and state-building remain deeply respected. His legacy continues to inspire future generations committed to the nation’s prosperity and defense.
