Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan has made history by becoming the first Armenian player to reach a WTA 500 semifinal, securing her spot with a hard-fought three-set victory over Australian qualifier Maya Joint at the Mérida Open Akron in Mexico, reports Zartonk Media.

Avanesyan, ranked No. 45 in the world, dropped the first set but dominated the remainder of the match, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. The 22-year-old Armenian has demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, previously defeating No. 7 seed Magdalena Frech (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (6-1, 6-4) to reach the quarterfinals.

Avanesyan now awaits the winner of the match between top seed Emma Navarro (USA) and wild card Zeynep Sonmez (TUR) in the semifinals, as she continues her historic run, proudly representing Armenia on the global stage.
