The Government of Armenia has announced that it will award a one-time payment of 300,000 AMD ($628) to the remaining 287 World War II veterans in Armenia on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Victory Day, per PM Pashinyan.
–
For this purpose, 86 million AMD has been allocated from the reserve fund of the government. An estimated 500 thousand residents of Armenia, then a republic of less than 1.4 million people, were drafted to the Soviet army during the bloodiest war in the history of humankind. Only just over half of them returned home alive.
–
The monthly bonuses paid to WWII veterans were raised from 50 thousand to 100 thousand AMD last year.
–
Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Zaruhi Batoyan reminded that this one-time payment is not related to the stipend that the veterans are already receiving, which in turn was doubled in 2019.
–
All public events to mark the 75th anniversary of the Victory have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
