Armenia reported its first coronavirus infection on Sunday, in a citizen returning from neighboring Iran, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a post on Facebook.

“The patient is a 29-year-old Armenian citizen who arrived in Yerevan by plane from Tehran on February 28. The man reportedly had a fever and went to see a doctor who tested him positive for the coronavirus. The man’s wife, who accompanied him from Tehran was tested negative for the coronavirus,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a post on Facebook.

“The people who were in contact with the patient will be quarantined. All the passengers in the flight from Iran were accompanied by masks by border guards were also wearing masks and medical gloves. The taxi driver who drove the couple home in Armenia and to the hospital will also be quarantined,” added Pashinyan.

“I urge you to keep calm, trust only the news spread by the government and official bodies, and employ the measures recommended by the Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of the infection,” concluded Pashinyan.

Armenia closed its border with Iran for two weeks and suspended air traffic a week ago. Iran is at the epicenter of the outbreak in the Middle East, with several regional nations reporting cases stemming from Iran.

Neighboring Georgia and Azerbaijan reported infections this week, with three in each country.
