Armenia’s women’s national tennis team opened its Billie Jean King Cup campaign with a sweeping 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in the first round of Group III of the European zone, held in San Marino. Drawn into the third subgroup, Armenia got off to a strong start in the tournament, reports Armenia’s Tennis Federation.

The Billie Jean King Cup, also known as the Women’s World Team Cup, is the premier international team competition in women’s tennis. Now in its 63rd edition, the competition runs throughout the season, with Group III matches taking place in San Marino from June 15 to June 20. The tournament culminates in the Finals this September in Shenzhen, China, where Italy will defend the title it has won the past two years.

Armenia took control from the outset in the singles. Ani Amiraghyan gave her opponent no chance, dominating from start to finish for a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Elina Avanesyan followed with a strong, composed performance to win 6-3, 6-2 in a match that marked her debut for the Armenian national team. The world number 215, Avanesyan adds significant firepower to a squad that also features Amiraghyan, Maria Azizyan, and Alina Soghomonyan.

With the tie already secured, Azizyan and Soghomonyan closed out the sweep in the doubles, winning 6-2, 6-1 to complete the clean result.

Armenia continues its campaign on June 18 against Albania, before facing Montenegro on June 19.
