In Armenia, domestic violence cases in the republic recorded a significant increase in 2024. This is stated in the 2024 activity report of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia, published on April 1.
Cases of physical and psychological abuse have increased especially sharply.
According to official data, 934 cases of domestic violence with physical abuse were recorded in 2024, while in 2023 this number was 372. The increase was 562 cases or 151 percent. Cases of psychological abuse in 2024 were 166, and in 2023 – 46. This indicator also increased by 120 cases or 261 percent.
In total, 1,360 cases of domestic and family violence were recorded in 2024, of which 1,100 (81 percent) were manifestations of physical and mental violence. A similar picture was also observed in 2023, 418 out of 508 cases (82 percent).
An increase in particularly serious cases of violence was also recorded. If in 2023 there were 3 cases of murder as a result of domestic and family violence, then in 2024 there were 13. Cases of intentional infliction of serious harm to health also increased, from 8 to 15.
The Prosecutor’s Office attaches importance to the cooperation of state bodies in the fight against domestic violence.
According to the report, in 2024, representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office continued to participate in working discussions on domestic and family violence, maintaining contact between territorial subdivisions and the Police in order to ensure an effective response within the framework of specific criminal proceedings.
On January 17, 2025, a working group was formed with the participation of representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Investigative Committee, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to increase the effectiveness of the fight against domestic violence.
In addition, in 2024, 35 prosecutors participated in training programs at the Academy of Justice on the topics of working with victims of violence, prevention, and legal response.
