The World Council of Churches (WCC) has expressed deep concern over recent developments in Armenia involving the Armenian Apostolic Church, including reported law enforcement actions at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the detention of high-ranking clergy members.
In a statement released this week, the WCC emphasized the Armenian Apostolic Church’s vital role in the spiritual, cultural, and historical life of the Armenian people. The Church, one of the oldest Christian institutions in the world, is also recognized as a key contributor to the global ecumenical movement and the shared witness of Christianity worldwide.
The organization voiced alarm over reports that force may have been used within sacred spaces and that senior clergy were taken into custody. It stated that such incidents raise “significant concerns” about the protection of religious freedom, the sanctity of places of worship, and the independence of religious institutions.
“We are also mindful of the impact that public rhetoric can have in moments of regional tensions,” the statement said, warning that language perceived as hostile or dismissive toward religious communities could exacerbate societal divisions.
In light of the current situation, the WCC called on the Armenian government to take several urgent steps:
- Ensure the protection, dignity, and legal rights of all religious leaders and institutions;
- Avoid actions or statements that may be interpreted as targeting religious bodies or inciting public antagonism;
- Uphold the principles of religious freedom, due process, and the peaceful practice of faith;
- Promote open and constructive dialogue between state authorities and religious communities.
The World Council of Churches reaffirmed its solidarity with the Armenian Apostolic Church and praised its enduring role in both national and international Christian life.
“We continue to pray for wisdom and discernment among Armenia’s leaders, for the well-being of its clergy and faithful, and for a resolution grounded in justice, peace, and respect for all,” the statement concluded.
At this critical moment, the WCC urged all stakeholders to act with responsibility and sensitivity, and to remain committed to values that promote dignity, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence.
