Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan, ranked 60th in the world, pulled off a stunning upset by defeating World No. 11 Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 32 at the Cincinnati Open.
The 21-year-old Avanesyan showcased incredible resilience after dropping the first set 2-6, making a remarkable comeback to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.
Avanesyan’s victory over Ostapenko follows another impressive win earlier in the tournament, where she knocked out former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, ranked 166th, in the Round of 64 with a straight-sets victory of 6-4, 7-5. With these victories, Avanesyan has now eliminated two former Grand Slam champions from the Cincinnati Open.
This match against Ostapenko marks Avanesyan’s 6th career win against top 20 players, further solidifying her growing reputation on the global stage.
Next, Avanesyan will face the winner of the match between Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, the No. 17 seed, and Poland’s Magda Linette, ranked 43rd, as she continues her impressive run at the Cincinnati Open, proudly representing Armenia on the global stage.
