The curtains have closed on the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra’s highly anticipated and successful first concert tour in the United States in June 2024, captivating sold-out audiences from coast to coast and paying homage to the enduring legacy of the renowned Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian.

Under the baton of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan, and joined by acclaimed violinist Sergey Khachatryan, the tour featured a repertoire that showcased Khachaturian’s most iconic compositions, resonating deeply with both Armenian and non-Armenian audiences. Known globally for his passionate performances, Khachatryan’s collaboration with ArmSymphony under Maestro Smbatyan’s direction was a testament to their shared dedication to Armenian cultural heritage and musical excellence.

Tour Highlights

The tour commenced in Boston at the historic Symphony Hall on June 26, where the orchestra set a powerful tone that showcased the depth of Armenian musical heritage. The magic continued at New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall on June 27 with a sold-out performance that echoed with resounding applause. The tour concluded on a high note in Los Angeles at Walt Disney Hall on June 29, where another full house gave a standing ovation.

Encore Highlights Across the Tour:

Each concert celebrated Khachaturian’s vibrant and emotive music, with Sergey Khachatryan delivering a captivating rendition of the composer’s renowned Violin Concerto. The tour’s encores, including Khachaturian’s “Waltz” from Masquerade and the “Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia” from Spartacus, were special treats at all venues. Notably, the Los Angeles audience received an additional encore, a heartfelt rendition of Charles Aznavour’s “Pour toi Arménie.” This tribute to Armenian resilience and spirit profoundly and deeply moved everyone present.

Artistic and Cultural Impact:

Reflecting on the tour’s success, Maestro Sergey Smbatyan remarked, “Bringing Khachaturian’s music to the United States was a privilege and joy and I would like to express heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support our orchestra received throughout the tour. Our performances not only showcased Armenian musical prowess but also fostered a deeper appreciation for our cultural heritage. Hopefully we can make this tour an annual event.”

Armen Tavadyan, CEO of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, highlighted the profound connection with audiences, citing sold-out performances and enthusiastic receptions that led to multiple encores at each venue. He attributed this success to the unwavering support of the orchestra’s honorary board, which includes prominent figures such as Alexander Yesayan, founder of Team Telecom Armenia; Vahe Kuzoyan, President of ServiceTitan; Garo Armen, CEO of Agenus; Lusine Yeghiazaryan, CFO of SADA Systems; and Mikayel Vardanyan, CPO of Picsart.

Tavadyan added, “We’ve also launched Classical Armenia, a new 501(c)(3) non-profit initiative in order to facilitate the cooperation with our supporters based in the United States. This aims not only to support future ArmSymphony endeavors but also to promote Armenian classical music across the U.S.”

In a moment of recognition, Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian honored the Honorary Board members and the management of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, presenting them with the LA City Council’s proclamations for their outstanding contributions to cultural enrichment and community outreach.

Founded by Maestro Sergey Smbatyan, ArmSymphony continues to uphold its mission of showcasing Armenian musical talent and heritage on the global stage. Through its performances, the orchestra seeks to foster cross-cultural exchange and introduce audiences worldwide to the timeless beauty of Armenian classical music.

ArmSymphony’s inaugural U.S. tour not only celebrated Armenian musical culture but also illustrated the universal resonance of its artistry. With each performance, the orchestra drew new admirers and fostered a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Armenian music.
