Michael Abramovitz, the president of the prestigious international human rights organization Freedom House, made a statement, expressing concern regarding the accumulation of military equipment on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan and the danger of ethnic cleansing in Artsakh.
“We condemn any plan to attack the sovereign territory of Armenia and call on the mediating parties to work to ensure the integrity of Armenia’s borders,” the statement says.
He noted that Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Lachin Corridor creates a threat of ethnic cleansing for the Armenian population of the region and exacerbates the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
“We call on the government of Azerbaijan to engage sincerely in peace talks, refrain from using the security of Artsakh Armenians as a weapon against them, and open the Lachin Corridor to guarantee unimpeded bilateral movement of people, vehicles and goods. We also call on the United Nations Human Rights Council to appoint a special rapporteur to assess the human rights situation in Artsakh,” the statement said. The Azerbaijanis have closed the Lachin Corridor since December 12, 2022. On July 26, RA sent a convoy with 400 tons of humanitarian aid to Artsakh. 19 trucks of humanitarian aid going from Yerevan to Artsakh are still in the border area of “‹”‹Kornidzor, and the trucks with humanitarian cargo sent by Paris and France have also been added to them.
