The poverty rate in the Republic of Armenia in 2019 has been estimated at 26.4% according to Armenia’s Statistical Committee which published the “The Social Image of Armenia – Poverty,” reports Hetq.

As clarified in the report, the poverty rate in 2019 is not comparable to the poverty rate of 23.5% recorded in 2018, due to changes in the poverty line, as well as consumption and poverty measurement methodology.

In other words, the methodology of calculating and estimating poverty has changed. Poverty in Armenia has been estimated since 1996. From 2019, the fourth revised methodology of the World Bank is used, that is, poverty assessment according to four thresholds.

According to the top line, those whose consumption per adult was lower than the top poverty line – 53,043 drams / month. 43.8% of the population corresponds to this threshold.

Moderately (or very) poor were those whose consumption per adult was below the poverty line – 35,054 drams / month. 10.2% of the population is on this threshold.

Extremely poor or malnourished  were those whose consumption per adult was below the poverty line of 23,763 drams / month. 1.4% of the population is extremely poor.

As for the average poverty rate, those whose consumption per adult was lower than the average poverty line, which is the average of the lower and upper poverty lines, were assessed as poor. That is the 44,048 AMD / monthly threshold. As mentioned, 26.4% of the population is poor.

Aragatsotn is the poorest region

Poverty in Armenia varies greatly from capital to region. According to 2019 data, the poverty rate in Yerevan was 14.1%. The poorest region is Aragatsotn with a poverty rate of 51.4%. 

For years, Shirak was considered the poorest region in Armenia.

Poverty manifests itself in different ways; it affects different aspects of life: consumption, food security, health, education, rights, including the right to vote, security, dignity, decent work. The indicators presented in the article show the material poverty of the population.

And the characteristics of non-material poverty are: poor health, low level of education or illiteracy, social neglect or rejection, insecurity, ineligibility of rights (freedom of speech), etc.
